Valerie ViliBELEM — New Zealand’s world and Olympic champion, Valerie Vili, notched her third Shot Put win of the Brazilian series, as Antigua’s Daniel Bailey ran a sub-10 seconds in the men’s 100m shot put at the Brazil Grand Prix athletics meeting in Belem on Sunday.

Vili, who this month set a personal best of 20.69m set earlier this month, threw 20.25m to beat Belarussian Natallia Mikhnevich who had 19.89m. Cuba’s Misleydis Gonzalez was third at 19.79m.

Vili, looking to defend her world title in Berlin in August, tops the women’s shot put standings after four meets of the world athletics series this year with 40 points.

A distant second on 29 is Gonzalez with fellow-Cuban Mailin Vargas a point behind.

On the track, became the fastest man this season, after posting a career best time of 9.99seconds to win the men’s 100m dash. Earlier this season he ran a slightly wind-aided 9.93secs. American world indoor fourth place finisher Michael Rodgers was second in 10.01.

Jamaica’s Marvin Anderson clocked 20.15 to win the 200m ahead of Monzavous Edwards (USA) 20.17 and Ainsley Waugh (JAM) 20.22.

In the women’s sprints, LaVerne  Jones-Ferrette of the US Virgin Islands captured the sprint double with respective times of 11.18 to win the 100m and a world-leading 22.49 to take the 200m.

Elsewhere, Portugal’s Nelson Évora jumped 17.66m to win the men’s Triple Jump, while Isa Phillips (JAM) 48.36, won the men’s 400m hurdles and his fellow countrywoman Bobby-Gaye Wilkins won another 400m dash in the series in 50.91.
