LIVERPOOL — Rafa Benitez is yet to confirm when star striker Fernando Torres will be back in action from the groin injury that has placed him on the sidelines.

The Liverpool boss said Torres had a late fitness test on Saturday to see if he would be able to play against Everton in the Merseyside derby that the visitors won 2-0.

But after the Spanish international complained about a slight pain during the exercises, the manager opted to leave him out of the team a measure of precaution.

“We were testing Fernando on Saturday. He told me he still had a little bit of pain, but he is improving and he is progressing,” Benitez said.

“We will test him again this week and hopefully we can push him a little bit.”

Meanwhile, a 12th-minute own goal from Joseph Yobo and Dirk Kuyt’s close-range effort after 80 minutes was enough to see the the Reds to all three points and Benitez is hoping it is the start of a new foundation.

“A win is important. Results went for us on Saturday so we realised it was an important game to move up the league,” he said.

“We’ve not performed as well as we’d have liked this season but we’re the ones who can change that, with a couple of wins hopefully we can do that but we still have a long way to go.”
