LaVerne Jones-Ferrette of Virgin Islands in the women's 60m dahs

The inform LaVerne Jones-Ferrette of the US Virgin Islands leads a handful of star sprinters in the next round of the women’s 60m dash at the IAAF World Indoor Championships.

Jones-Ferrette, the world-leader and event favourite at 6.97secs, posted a cruising 7.14secs to win her heat and head a strong list of athletes which included Jamaica’s Veronica Campbell-Brown, Carmelita Jeter of USA and Bahamian Chandra Sturrup.

Campbell-Brown took her heat in an easy looking 7.21secs over Sturrup 7.22. Carmelita Jeter, who is also another race gold medal contender took her heat in a relaxed 7.30.

Also cruising through were Myriam SoumarĂ© (7.22) and Paulette Zang Milama (7.31) who both won their their heat, with Jamaica’s Sheri-Ann Brooks (7.32) also going through.

Dwain Chambers (6.59), Americans Trell Kimmons (6.61), Mike Rodgers (6.69) and Caribbean stars Jamaican Nesta Carter and Daniel Bailey of Antigua all qualified in the men’s race.

Elsewhere on the first day, Terrence Trammell (7.60), Dayron Robles (7.74), Xiang Liu (7.79) and David Oliver (7.60) all qualified in the men’s 60m hurdles without any serious problems.

  1. I would love to see LaVerne carry some of this 60M speed over to the 100M.

  2. Was Nesta Carter injured or had any problem I’m not aware of? I did not expect him to place last. Is he just one of those people who perform well in the 100m and not the 60m?

    Bunny, LJF is looking so good I expect her to be serious competition in the 100m. I was kinda hoping to see Kerron Stewart competing in Doha if for no other reason than to improve the first half of her race. If that girl was as dominant at the start as she is with her closing, there would be no stopping her.
