FLORIDA, USA
- Olympic 200m champion Veronica Campbell could miss the rest of
the season, following a leg injury sustained during the women's
200-metre dash at the Norwich Union British Grand Prix in
Gateshead, England.
According to
reports from her manager, the Jamaican has a torn muscle in her
left quad, which could keep her out of competition until mid
August.
Campbell,
the 2004 Olympic champion and the World no. 2 ranked female
sprinter over the half-lap, sustained the injury 20-metres into
the home stretch and had to be carried off the track in a
wheelchair.
The
24-year-old former University of Arkansas stand-out, will visit
a specialist sometime this week to have a full scan on the
injured leg. Campbell was running her third half-lap race this
outdoor season.
The Jamaican
speedster had an unstable season prior to her injury. After
back-to-back defeats to compatriot Sherone Simpson over the
200m, Campbell returned to the adidas Track Classic in Carson
and defended her 100m crown with a world-leading 10.99 seconds.
She, however, was defeated by former Olympic sprint queen,
Marion Jones of USA over the distant at the Reebok Grand Prix in
