Powell to warm up for Bolt at Trinidad Trials

FLORIDA, USA -- Jamaica’s former World record holder Asafa Powell is expected to make an appearance at the Trinidad and Tobago National Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium later this month.

According reports from the Islands, the sprinter is scheduled to run in the 100m dash as a warm for the Jamaica Championships to be held at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica from June 27-29.

"He (Powell) is expected to compete at the Championships, and we are very happy for that," Allan Baboolal, committee chairman for the championships was quoted as saying at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Port of Spain, Trinidad on Wednesday. 

Powell watched his own world record eclipsed on the weekend when his fellow countryman Usain Bolt shattered his previous 9.74-seconds mark with superb 9.72-sec run at the Reebok Grand Prix in New York City, Saturday.

The pair is expected to clash for the first time in the 100m at the Jamaica Trials and Powell, who has not run competitively since his 10.04-secs opener in Melbourne, Australia in February, will be hoping for a good showing.

The World Championships bronze medallist has been out of competition for about month following a chest injury he picked up during a training session in the gym.

His fellow Jamaican teammate Brigette Foster-Hylton, the sprint hurdle star, is also slated to make an appearance at the three-day meet.
