LONDON — Chelsea have closed in on signing Argentina’s wonderboy forward Sergio Aguero, according to a report by ESPN Soccernet on Friday.

Soccernet reported that a source close to the deal has confirmed negotiations for the Atletico Madrid 21-year-old who has reportedly said “yes” to a package that will see his wages rise to £250,000 by the end of the contract.

The report stated that the package is somewhere in the area of £100 million.

“There is still more talking to do, but let’s see. There is now a possibility, although with so many complications involved you would have to say it’s still 50-50 whether it will finally go though,” Soccernet reported its source as saying.

The likes of Manchester United and Manchester City have also showed interest in the past for the striker, but with United’s manager Sir Alex Ferguson already ruling out spending so much on one player, the big spending City is likely to be the other club that could challenge Chelsea for the player’s service.

However, Aguero is reportedly not interested in joining City, despite their hefty bank account.

Soccernet said: “The player doesn’t want to go there, and Manchester City do have a problem with trying to sing players at this level, as they did with Kaka, because they are not serious yet. They will be, but they are not just yet.”

Aguero fellow strike partner Diego Forlan has also welcome a move back to the English League. He was a member of Manchester United but found the going rough to score goals at Old Trafford and was eventually transferred.
