Arsene Wenger tells John Terry his boasting will backfire

LONDON — Arsene Wenger has dismissed John Terry’s claim that Chelsea are close to being ‘invincible’ and warned the skipper that despite their good run of late, football is a game of glorious uncertainty.

In midweek Terry said in the Daily Star that: “I really do think we are close to getting back to the invincible feel we had three years ago.”

But the Arsenal manager who guided his team to an undefeated title winning 2003-04 season, said he does not see anything too spectacular about the current Chelsea side and warned Terry that his boasting may very well backfire over the coming months.

“I see nothing when I watch the games which suggests that any one team is flying,” Wenger said in the Sunday Star.

“John Terry says Chelsea are invincible – but there is only one team since I have been in England that has been invincible! Nobody else has done that.

“We lost at Sunderland  recently – and I believe this kind of result can happen at least once in any season. That’s why my Invincible side was so special.”

Arsenal are currently preparing to entertain the Blues in the Premier League on Sunday and Wenger said despite them currently being at 12 games unbeaten in all  competitions and sitting atop of the league, the visitors were extremely fortunate in their 1-0 win against Manchester United earlier this month – courtesy of two blatant  refereeing errors.

“At the moment it is very close. People are predicting that Chelsea are running away with the title but I am not  convinced of that at all,” Wenger explained.

“If you look at their game against [Manchester] United, that match could have gone more  United’s way than Chelsea’s. And I also consider we were unlucky against West Ham and  Sunderland with some of the decisions.

“Chelsea have also played more games at home than us.

“The title race, though, is a lot more open than some  people are saying. If we can beat them on  Sunday then the gap will be five points and, we’ll still have a game in hand.”

Wenger, in the meantime will have to tackle the league leaders without top scorer Robin van Persie, who has been ruled out for five months. And there is still doubt as to whether William Gallas will also be available.
