LONDON, England — Chelsea are on the verge of giving up bringing Franck Ribery to the English League, claiming that they will not break the bank in a bidding war with Real Madrid over the Bayern Munich star.
The German star Ribery was a big target of several high-profiled clubs in summer, including Chelsea, Real and Manchester United, but Bayern were unwilling to let the player go even in a transfer market that went overboard in player pricing.
However, with the market reopening in January, the English League leaders are again considering the possibilities of make another attempt to sign the French international, the London Evening Standard reported.
Bayern managed to fend-off the high spending Real in the summer window, but may sell their star for a quality price after he is refused to sign a new deal and has been unsettled by all the speculation.
The German club reported that they had turned down a cash-plus Jose Bosingwa offer from Chelsea for the 26-year-old in the summer.
It is also understood Chelsea made a bid in the region of £40m and are not prepared to go much higher, while Real, who has always been the first choice of Ribery, are reportedly willing to pay more.
