Silva, who made a goalscoring return in Valencia’s to a 2-1 home defeat against Deportivo La Coruna in the Cup first leg last week, was on target again in the 33rd minute inside the Estadio Municipal de Chapín, as the visitors take a 2-1 half-time lead against Xerez.

Mata had earlier given Valencia an 11th minute lead, but Carlos Calvo equalised after 25 minutes.

Elsewhere, Espanyol and Real Zaragoza are 1-1 at half-time, Sporting Gijon have a 1-0 lead on Getafe, while there are no scores in the Deportivo La Coruña vs Osasuna and Málaga vs Athletic Bilbao clashes.

In the only English Championships game played on Sunday Roy Keane saw his Ipswich Town side giving up a first minute lead and then battled hard to take a point at Leicester City.

Ryan McGivern’s own goal gave the visitors the lead in just the first minute of play, but Steve Howard equalised in the 38th to share the points.
