Real Madrid moved top of the Spanish league for the first time since the end of November after defeating Real Mallorca 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.
Argentine inform striker Gonzalo Higuain scored his sixth goals in his last five league matches and his 11th of the season with a seventh minute strike before substitute Esteban Granero netted five-minutes in the second half as they maintained their flawless home record with a ninth consecutive win.
The win Real move a point ahead of Barcelona at the top of table although the champions who are currently hammering Tenerife 3-0 at half-time with a double form Lionel Messi, can retake the lead later on Sunday.
The defeat saw Mallorca drop to sixth although they are only one point off the Champions League spots due to their 100 percent home record of eight wins.
Meanwhile goals from Spanish internationals Juan Mata, David Silva and Carlos Marchena saw Valencia to a 3-0 victory at Xerez and boost confidence for Thursday’s last 16 King’s Cup match at Deportivo La Coruna.
Valencia lie six points behind Real in third after making it seven wins from nine on Sunday.
