Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez made six changes to the side humiliated in the FA Cup by Reading as the visitors faced a difficult task at the Britannia Stadium.
Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Yossi Benayoun and Daniel Agger were all injured, while new signing Maxi Rodriguez, Alberto Aquilani and Diego Cavalieri were dropped to the bench as Jose Reina, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Martin Skrtel, Javier Mascherano, Fabio Aurelio and David Ngog all returned.
Stoke had Tuncay available after a hamstring scare and he started the Barclays Premier League clash, while Salif Diao came in against his old club with Liam Lawrence reverting to the bench.
