Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has withdrawn an appeal to the FA over his four-match ban.

The newly-installed England captain was charged with violent conduct on 26 January following an off-the-ball clash with Hull City forward Craig Fagan three days earlier.

The original offence carried a three-match ban, which Ferdinand duly appealed. But the appeal was considered “frivolous” by the FA and the ban extended to four games on 29 January.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson told media last Friday that he supported Ferdinand’s right to appeal the ban extension, but the player has since withdrawn the request, which was due to go in front of the appeals board on Friday 12 February.

Rio has already served two matches of the four-game ban and is due to also miss United’s away games against Aston Villa (Wednesday 10 February) and Everton (Saturday 20 February). He’ll be available for selection in the Carling Cup final on Sunday 28 February.
