Wayne Rooney under fire from manager

A flaming Sir Alex Ferguson has accused star striker Wayne Rooney of jeopardising Manchester United’s
hopes of defending the English League title after playing almost the entire 90 minutes for England in mid week.

Ferguson said Rooney’s decision to play every minute in England’s 3-1 friendly win over Egypt at Wembley on Wednesday could wear him out for the important games to come.

“I was disappointed with Wayne,” said Ferguson in The Mirror. “He didn’t come off. I couldn’t believe it and now he’s a doubt for the Wolves game.

“There were some changes made during the game and I thought Rooney would be one of them.

“He should have signalled that he wanted to come off. But he can’t say ‘no’, that’s his problem.

“I don’t blame Fabio Capello. He has to pick his best team, because a win was important. But Wayne’s own enthusiasm has caused it.

“Playing at Wembley, on that kind of pitch, for almost an hour in the Carling Cup final on Sunday, then virtually 90 minutes on Wednesday, was far too much.

United are already with experienced striker Michael Owen, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season, after it emerged he needs surgery to cure a hamstring problem.

Owen was forced to leave the field after scoring during the first-half of United’s 2-1 Carling Cup final win over Aston Villa on Sunday.

He will do surgery on Monday.
