Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has insisted he prefers his very own Fernando Torres over the towering Wayne Rooney of Manchester United.
Rooney is the hottest striker in the English League this and is being regarded as one of the best players in the world after punching in 32 goals thus far in this campaign, but Benitez still believes he still has the best striker in his rank – in Torres and he wouldn’t trade him for any other forward.
“I don’t think I would swap Fernando for anyone, not even Rooney, not really. Fernando is a fantastic player, so is Rooney too,” Benitez explained.
“There’s no doubt Rooney is very, very good. But Fernando is our player, the fans love him and we want to keep him for a very long time.
“He has something that is very important. These players make the difference in these big games, and for us, Fernando is very important.
“If he had been fit all this season, then the gap to the top would have been smaller, that is clear. If Fernando is fit, he’d score in a lot of games.”
Benitez’s Liverpool side travel to Old Trafford to face Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United on Sunday and he is confident he has the players at his disposal who can pull off a win.
“We know we can match any team. We have players like Torres and (Steven) Gerrard – if they are fully fit they can change games and win games,” he said.
He also admits that both Gerrard and Torres are fired up to face United.
“Gerrard loves playing United and I think Torres does too,” he said.
“The top class players want to play against the top sides and against other top class players.
Both will enjoy it hopefully and it will be a challenge for them.”
