Rooney’s Brace Keeps United Five Clear
Wayne Rooney scored twice to guide Manchester United to a 3-1 win over Aston villa and extend their lead at the top of the Barclay’s Premier League table.
There were also victories for Arsenal and Chelsea, while West Bromwich and Wigan played to a draw on Tuesday.
At Old Trafford, Rooney gave United the lead in the first minute of play with a brilliant finish, following a deep 60-yard pass from Edwin van der Sar.
And it was Rooney, who has been struggling to find the net this season, that made it 2-0 just before the end of the first half when he fired home a Nani cross from the right hand side to beat Brad Friedel.
Big money transfer Darren Bent pulled a goal back for Villa to make the score 2-1 in the 59th minute after being found by Stewart Downing.
However, captain Nemanja Vidic rifled home a right footer that any striker would have been proud off four minutes after Bent’s goal for Sir Alex Ferguson’s men to seal the win and remain undefeated this season.
Elsewhere, defending champions Chelsea recovered from a goal down to beat Sunderland 4-2 at the Stadium of Light, Arsenal came from a goal down to beat Everton 2-1 in a heated contest, while West Bromwich and Wigan finished 2-2.
Meanwhile, despite the defeat, Everton boss David Moyes believes his team played well enough to leave with something.
“I thought the players did a sterling job, but we gave it away by our defending at a set-piece,” he said.
“We have got nobody else to blame but ourselves.
“The players did really well and except for a lapse at a set-piece, they did a really good job.”
Arsenal remained five points behind United in the title chase and he was happy to claim another victory to keep the pressure on the leaders.
He said: “Tonight was a victory of a team with fantastic spirit and a never say die attitude rather than our usual game, but that is needed in this championship.
“I am very happy because the spirit is maybe the aspect of the team that’s been questioned the most, and that’s where we have been the most convincing recently, in smaller (cup) games against Leeds, Ipswich and Huddersfield.
“We played our 10th game of the month tonight and have shown, where our football has dropped a bit, a fantastic attitude.”
