Rio Ferdinand is the big bookmarkers favourite to replace John Terry as England captain, if the reports claiming the Chelsea star has been dropped as national team captain are true.
Reports said on Friday that Fabio Capello has decided to take the arm band away from Terry after the pair met in a 12-minute meeting this afternoon.
Manchester United’s defender Ferdinand is the hot favourite to replace him.
Liverpool’s skipper Steven Gerrard is also on the short list of possibilities to filled the role, so too are Terry’s fellow club team-mate Frank Lampard and Manchester United’s inform striker Wayne Rooney.
It highly unlikely, however, that Rooney will be seriously considered, with the bookies claiming that although he is in rich form, handing him the arm band just now might be too soon for the 24-year-old.
EARLIER
Earlier in the afternoon, Sky Sports News reported that Terry had been dropped as the captain of England after a meeting at Wembley with England manager Fabio Capello to discuss the alleged media reports involving the central defender’s private life.
If the news is indeed true this would be a massive blow for Terry who named captain of the national side in May 2008.
The news is yet to be confirmed by the FA, but reports have revealed that the meeting is already over – the Football Association refuse to comment on reports.
